Selective/Block Gear Changes

Modern engines have improved enormously in flexibility since I learnt to drive 20+ years ago. The efficient braking systems and gear box efficiency of today’s cars often make it unnecessary to change into every gear when changing up and down the gearbox, as I was originally taught to do.

By missing out gears at the appropriate time you have more time to concentrate on the road ahead and allow you keep both hands on the steering wheel for longer.

Changing Down

As a general rule, it is preferable and safer to brake to the desired speed and then change down into the appropriate gear. It may be necessary to maintain a slight pressure on the footbrake whilst changing.

Changing Up

Many occasions when changing up it is desirable to skip gears. However, beware, accelerating too fiercely for too long in lower gears as this:

  • uses more fuel
  • could damage engine
  • could cause wheel spin and loss of control

How Many Gears to Miss Out

Deciding which gears to skip depends on the vehicle, road and traffic conditions. Most common combinations are:

Theory Test Help

When I first passed my Driving Test, a very long time ago, theory questions consisted of the examiner asking a couple of questions about the Highway Code at the end of your test. Times have changed considerably, and are set to change further. The Theory Test now comprises of two parts, 50 multiple choice "touch screen" questions and the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). There is no that way you will pass the Theory Test today without doing some studying. The current pass rate is only 63% and, at £31 a time, it is expensive.

We sell all the materials needed to help you obtain your Driving Licence, including Theory Test books and CD roms at our
online shop.

Our patient, and concientious instructors, will help you during your
practical driving lessons to understand the Highway Code and how it is implemented on the road. Many people struggle to get to grips with the theory and our instructors are happy to teach a theory lesson with their laptop in order to help pupils gain a better understanding.
